Why do high-quality transformers use copper wire?

Why do high-quality toroidal transformers use pure copper wire? Before answering this question, we need to clarify a concept: what is high quality? Is there a standard for high-quality toroidal transformers? For transformers, it means high efficiency, energy saving, and temperature rise. Low power consumption and long service life. Some low-power aluminum wire wound transformers can also achieve the above points. Therefore, it is a false proposition whether all high-quality toroidal transformers use pure copper wire. Let’s first look at why pure copper wires are used in toroidal transformers!

The first is the difference in cost. There is no doubt that the cost of a toroidal transformer wound with pure copper wire is higher than that with aluminum wire. One is that the corrosion resistance of copper wire is much higher than that of aluminum wire, which gives the toroidal transformer the advantage of having a longer service life without manufacturing process errors and improper use. In addition, the toroidal transformer wound with copper wire has low voltage loss. Due to the low resistivity of the copper wire, when the same current flows through the same cross-section, the voltage drop of the copper wire is small. Therefore, the same transmission distance can ensure higher voltage quality.

Of course, copper wires have some other advantages compared to aluminum wires, such as greater carrying capacity, higher mechanical strength, lower heat generation, etc. Since its inception, EEIO Transformer has always put quality first, and each toroidal transformer is wound with all copper wire.
